Art League Houston is excited to announce The Time Travel Research Institute Presents, an installation of light sculpture and collage by Houston based and self-taught artist Patrick Turk.

Prepare to enter the surreal and extraordinary research laboratory of artist and quasi-scientist Patrick Turk, whose recent studies in quantum mechanics and atomic sciences have generated an interactive light installation that playfully explores the phenomenon of time travel through a series of sculptural works that combine three-dimensional collage with electronic mechanisms, LED technology and futuristic design.

The exhibition includes a series of six wall dependant sculptures that are installed around a mysterious hexagonal structure in the center of the gallery and include circular viewing portals of different sizes and magnification strengths, which distort the time-space manifold and create microcosmic wormhole matrices that allow the viewer to literally travel through time.

Each light sculpture contains a complex three dimensional collage that relates to a significant time in history, ranging from the evolution of the dinosaurs to the adventures of the Wild Wild West and alternative realities of the near and far future. The collages incorporate multiple layers of pop culture imagery which have been meticulously hand carved from various picture books such as children’s comics, science-fiction novels, encyclopedias, history books and scientific diagrams and produce a multidimensional surface, across which, time has literally been smeared.

The opening reception is Friday, March 11, 2011 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. with an artist talk at 6:30 p.m.

When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth!

Not only is this a really interesting museum but it also has a great IMAX and the Cockrell Butterfly Museum where you walk through a lush tropical dome and if you are dressed in bright colors, the butterflies will land on you. There is free parking in some surrounding lots or there is a garage. I believe you can also use the light rail to get pretty close to it.

Exhibition on view through December 31, 2011.

From the humble trilobite to the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex, the science of paleontology explores the history of life on Earth. Paleontologists study the fossil remains of dinosaurs and other creatures, including their skeletons, shells, footprints, and even coprolite (fossil excrement).

The Museum’s Hall of Paleontology contains more than 450 fossils and fossil replicas, providing a vivid glimpse into the incredible 3.5-billion-year story of life on Earth.

Parking: Limited lot parking near the museum, but plenty in Hermann Park if you’re up for a pleasant walk. Garage parking $10; $5 for museum members. Convenient to METRO Rail’s Museum District stop.

Blue Man Group

I saw these guys in NYC years ago when they were well know in NY but hadn’t been discovered by the rest of the world yet. The show was wild and hilarious. Blue Men were climbing walls and roaming through the audience. It will be interesting to see how much has changed.

3 pm & 7 pm, Sunday, March 13, 2011
Jones Hall
“BLUE MAN GROUP is best known for their wildly popular theatrical shows and concerts which combine comedy, music, and technology to produce a totally unique form of entertainment. “The simple fact is that James McMurtry may be the truest, fiercest songwriter of his generation…” -Stephen King

“James writes like he’s lived a lifetime.” —John Mellencamp

“The most vital lyricist in America today.” —Bob Harris, BBC 2 RADIO

“James McMurtry is a true Americana poet – actually he is a poet regardless of genre” —Michael Nesmith
“McMurtry might be the best topical writer performing right now and (Just Us Kids) finds him at his finest.”
—Patterson Hood, Drive-By Truckers

The son of acclaimed author Larry McMurtry (Lonesome Dove, Terms of Endearment), James grew up on a steady diet of Johnny Cash and Roy Acuff records. His first album, released in 1989, was produced by John Mellencamp and marked the beginning of a series of acclaimed projects for Columbia and Sugar Hill.

In 2004, McMurtry released the universally lauded Live in Aught-Three on Compadre Records. 2005’s Childish Things garnered some of the highest critical praise of McMurtry’s career and spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Americana Music Radio Chart in 2005 and 2006. In September 2006, Childish Things and “We Can’t Make It Here” won the Americana Music Awards for album and song of the year, respectively. McMurtry received more Americana Music Award nominations for 2008’s Just Us Kids.

The album marked his highest Billboard 200 chart position in more than 19 years. The Washington Post noted McMurtry’s live prowess: “Much attention is paid to James McMurtry’s lyrics, and rightfully so: He creates a novel’s worth of emotion and experience in four minutes of blisteringly stark couplets. What gets overlooked, however, is that he’s an accomplished rock guitar player.

Cirque du Soliel OVO

The first Cirque show I saw was Quidam. I was so enthralled with it that is saw it 4 more times. Since them some have been better than others. This one looks amazing.

Premium- 125.00 $87.50 $112.50

$Level 1 – 90.00 $63.00 $81.00

$Level 2 – 70.00 $49.00 $63.00

$Level 3 – 45.00 $31.50 $40.50$

OVO is a headlong rush into a colourful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. The insects’ home is a world of biodiversity and beauty filled with noisy action and moments of quiet emotion.

When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives.

It’s love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye – and the feeling is mutual.

OVO is overflowing with contrasts. The hidden, secret world at our feet is revealed as tender and torrid, noisy and quiet, peaceful and chaotic. And as the sun rises on a bright new day the vibrant cycle of insect life begins anew.
